Since 27 August 2026, it's official: Google lets guests find, compare and book hotels directly in its AI chat, known as AI Mode — with no website visit, no detour through an OTA search mask. Anyone who still thinks AI search is a thing of the future needs to revise that view. The booking is happening now.
The problem in everyday hotel operations
Many hoteliers have their website, their Google Business Profile and perhaps a booking engine under control. What few have on their radar: a guest no longer needs to visit their own website at all to book. They simply describe to Google what they're looking for — "double room in Lucerne, early October, with lake view" — and are presented with a ready-made selection including reviews. The booking is then completed with a click, directly in the chat. For hotels that aren't listed with the right booking partners, this means: invisible at exactly the moment the guest is ready to buy.
The latest from the announcement
Google presented the new feature in an official blog post. The key points:
- Hotel booking directly in chat: Guests describe their trip and preview it in AI Mode, receive a visual list with reviews and comparison criteria, and can complete the booking with "Continue on Google".
- Payment via Google Pay: Room selection, cancellation terms and payment all take place entirely within the Google interface.
- The hotel remains the contracting party: Google itself does not act as the seller. The merchant of record is the hotel or the respective booking platform — including customer service.
- Launch with major partners: The rollout begins in the US in English with Booking.com, Expedia, Hotels.com, Priceline, Trip.com, as well as the chains Marriott, Hilton, IHG, Choice Hotels and Wyndham.
- Additionally: points and miles search. AI Mode now also displays the price in loyalty points — further evidence of how deeply Google is integrating booking logic into chat.
- Gradual rollout: The feature launches in a limited region initially but, according to Google, will expand "in the coming weeks" — faster outside EEA countries than within them, to begin with.
What does this mean for your hotel?
1. Your visibility is already being decided at the research stage
If the guest completes the booking directly in chat, it's no longer just about how well your website ranks. What matters is whether your hotel even appears in the data sources Google draws on to compile its answers — current prices, accurate availability, clean reviews and a complete Google Business Profile. If any of these fundamentals is missing, your property simply won't show up in the chat.
2. Your OTA dependency could increase further
The rollout starts with the big OTA names and chain brands. Smaller, independent properties risk coming off doubly worse in this new channel: partly because they are less often directly integrated, and partly because commissions continue to flow to the OTA whenever the booking is made through them. Anyone who wants to strengthen direct bookings needs to actively monitor this development and take countermeasures.
3. Your data foundation becomes the real competitive factor
Reviews, price accuracy, room descriptions, cancellation terms — all of this is data an AI needs in order to represent your hotel correctly at all. A well-maintained Google Business Profile and structured data on your own website are therefore no longer optional extras, but the entry ticket to this new sales channel.
Common mistakes
- Dismissing the development as "only relevant for large chains". Smaller properties will sooner or later be affected by the same mechanisms — those who wait lose lead time.
- Neglecting the Google Business Profile. Outdated prices, missing photos or incorrect opening hours have a direct impact on how AI represents you.
- Focusing only on the website, not on the data behind it. A beautiful website is of little use if prices, availability and room descriptions aren't machine-readable and kept up to date.
Conclusion
With hotel booking in AI Mode, Google is taking a concrete step from pure AI search to AI transaction. For hoteliers, this means: the question is no longer whether guests will search and book via AI systems, but how quickly your own property prepares for it. Anyone who gets their data foundation in order now — Google Business Profile, prices, availability, reviews — gains a head start once the feature becomes available here too. The rollout may still be limited to the US today. The logic behind it affects every hotel that wants to be found online.
