Google is integrating hotel bookings directly into the AI Mode of search. What this means for hotel SEO and how you can prepare.

Google now books along: what AI Mode means for your hotel

Updated on 19 September 2026

At the end of August 2026, Google announced that travellers will soon be able to select and book hotels directly within the AI Mode of Google Search – with no detour via a classic website. For hotel SEO, this is more than a technical footnote: it shifts the decisive fork in the booking process a good deal earlier, to a moment where many hotels are not yet visible at all.

The problem in everyday hotel business

Until now, travel planning went roughly like this: Google search, comparing several hotel pages, reading reviews, and eventually landing on a website or a booking portal to reserve. Many hotels have geared their website and online presence precisely to this process. If a large part of this comparison work in future takes place within an AI conversation, before the guest even opens a single hotel page, the starting position changes fundamentally. The question is no longer just whether a hotel ranks well – but whether an AI recognises it as a suitable answer at all.

Latest from the study and the announcement

  • On 27 August 2026, Google announced that hotels will in future be bookable directly within AI Mode. Users name the destination, dates and desired features, and the AI compiles suitable properties with reviews and comparison information.
  • The booking process runs via the "Continue on Google" feature, where room category and booking conditions can be checked directly and paid for via Google Pay.
  • At launch, major chains such as Hilton, Marriott, IHG, Choice Hotels and Wyndham, as well as the OTAs Booking.com, Expedia, Hotels.com, Priceline and Trip.com, are integrated as partners. Independent individual hotels are not yet included.
  • AI Mode has already passed the mark of one billion monthly active users.
  • According to Google, the results at launch are organic; there are no paid placements yet – though Google is already testing advertising formats.
  • The feature is initially launching only in the USA and in English. There is no date yet for Europe and Switzerland.

What does this mean for your hotel?

1. Structured, up-to-date data becomes the ticket of entry

For an AI to suggest a hotel, it must be able to reliably read out prices, availability, amenities, location and reviews.

2. Your own brand must convince before the AI makes its selection

Reviews, clear descriptions and a coherent positioning need to be consistently present everywhere on the web well beforehand.

3. Direct booking remains possible, but requires technical connectivity

For smaller hotels, an integration is barely realistic today. This makes a functioning classic direct-booking strategy all the more important.

Case study: a city hotel in Basel

Starting point: Solid but unremarkable online presence without structured data.

Measures: Up-to-date room descriptions, complete Google Business Profile, consistent responses to reviews.

Result: Noticeably improved visibility in both classic and AI-supported search queries.

Common mistakes

  1. Waiting until the feature becomes available in Switzerland.
  2. Treating your own website as the only touchpoint.
  3. Neglecting review management.

Conclusion

The announcement shows where search is heading: from information delivery to transaction support. Anyone who keeps prices, availability, amenities and reviews well maintained today improves both future AI visibility and classic ranking in the here and now.
